Personal Branding Interview David Brier - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview David Brier - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to David Brier, who is a award-winning brand identity designer, author and branding expert. He is the author of Defying Gravity and Rising Above the Noise. In this interview, David talks about brand identity for people and companies, logos and slogans, and more. What goes into a corporate brand identity? Would this be similar for a personal brand? The basics of “a brand” are largely misunderstood. While aesthetics, design and appearance are of considerable and noteworthy importance, a brand has as its primary function, differentiation. Why? Because if everyone is doing this and that in our age of information overload, they all blend into one mass confusion or a sea of noise. My most favorite description is “a sea of sameness.” Here are some facts: People have less time to absorb more information ever than in history. Each year, 26,000 new products will come out. It was mentioned recently that as many as 50 million tweets were posted in a single day. Just the other day, Google reported that 293 million searches were conducted in a single day. One report stated that a new blog is started every half second. So with that being the marketplace, one must consider what will be “a brand” that will stand apart from the chaos. A corporate brand must reflect the company but more importantly, it must 1) be distinct from the competition and 2) resonate with the intended audience. Apple’s iPod which was the 3rd or 4th MP3 became the champion because it tackled both of those points remarkably well. It identified to whom their product would be meaningful: teenagers and those in their 20- and 30-somethings. The same holds true for a personal brand. But in the “personal brand” category, I see a lot of people do â€" who may write well, or have charisma or are passionate â€" is ignore the power of design and great overall presentation. The great corporate brands, such as Apple, Harley Davidson or Nike (or Martha Stewart for that matte) know the value and importance of design, language, photography, color and all those components that great corporate brand s know. I see these as the most overlooked and abused aspects in personal branding. I recently wrote an ebook entitled “The Lucky Brand” which covers some of these points in detail. Whats more important, a logo or a slogan for a brand? I wouldn’t say either is more important, and I wouldn’t say its a choice. This is like asking, what’s more important, the shirt or the tie? Or the dress or the shoes. I would say it’s the ensemble and how the pieces work together. You could ask yourself, would Apple be where it is today without its world-famous “Think different” campaign? Yet today, you simply see the icon, no words. Each brand is its own unique vision and creates its own vocabulary. In the 30 years I’ve been creating brands, sometimes one factor is more important and plays a more prominent role than the other. But both dress a brand up for success. How has your role as a brand strategist changed in the past decade. What are customers looking for now? I would say my role has become more comprehensive. Ten to fifteen years ago, clients would need branding solutions that were more visually based. Today, there’s this other factor: the channel of social media. I stress this as a channel because some clients have come to us passionate over this new strategy: Social media. I then explain social media is not a strategy, it is a channel upon which the right branding and the right messages can be distributed. So, now I merely add that into the mix of our planning and anticipation to make what we create work on those additional channels. Still, my role is helping the client focus on this: Give me 4-6 reasons their customers should give a damn about their product. Then converting that into something remarkable, captivating, engrossing and exciting. If you don’t have that, you’ll never arrive at that terrific “dialog” everyone talks about having with their customers. Well, it’s hard to have a conversation of you’re invisible. When a company is seeking your help but they have no differentiation in their market, what questions do you ask? Ooh, this is like asking the secrets to making a brand kick its competition’s ass. There are some “usual suspects” I seek out. Here are some key ones: Who are the leaders in their industry? Do they offer anything exclusive that their competition does not offer? I know you’re great, but so is everyone else (the truth hurts, but the competition also think they’re the cat’s meow). So, why should your prospective customer care about what you’re offering? What can be done that will set you apart? What “the standard” to which everyone operates? That’s why Dyson was able to put all the other vacuum cleaners to shame because all them grew complacent making incremental improvements, but Dyson rewrote the rule book. Like Apple did with iPhone. How has social media impacted the brand of your business and yourself? Social media has been interesting and very beneficial because there’s that much more of a channel of communication to convey what you’re about. It’s also wide open virgin territory, where you can reach the world with greater ease. The trick is having something to say in a unique way. For example I wrote a book entitled, Defying Gravity and Rising Above the Noise. To make that work, my URL is risingabovethenoise.com and my title is Chief Gravity Defyer. That snowballs into a communication thats more memorable than brand specialist or brand identity expert. Those would be accurate (with a gazillion others using those same words and titles) but those wouldnt differentiate. This comes in handy with social media. I kind of fell into social media. I’m not a first adopter when it comes to technology but when I get on, I start to create wildly. So, now I am an expert blogger on two continents. The US one is on Fast Company magazine. I am the number one submitter of information on about four categories on BusinessWeek’s Business Exchange (I think its Brand Identity, Brand Strategy, Graphic Design). I have a steady stream of business owners who purchase my book and my free ebook, “The Lucky Brand.” I also have had thousands of people view my presentations on Slideshare. So, there are a lot of avenues not including articles you can find. Video will the next area to majorly tackle. Here’s a great example of the power of social media: I submitted the work we created for one client out of Napa Valley which subsequently got onto about 20+ blogs resulting in their getting inquiries from France to sell their product. Without social media, that would have never happened. - David Brier is a award-winning brand identity designer, author and branding expert. He is the recipient of over 300 industry awards and is the Creative Director of DBD International. He is the author of Defying Gravity and Rising Above the Noise. His firms work has won the admiration of peers and organizations but, more importantly, has helped clients jump start their brands in new and innovative ways, even (and especially) when theyve failed in previous brand makeovers. On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Why Youre Off Base About How Others View You at Work

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Why You're Off Base About How Others View You at Work In the workplace, it can be tough to find that middle ground between being pushy and being a pushover. But you figure you do a pretty good job, right? Just theright amount of assertivenessso that youre not a jerk or a wimp? You may want to reconsider your belief as a new study shows that the majority of us areoff basewhen it comes to judging how others view us. In the study,Daniel Ames, professor of management at Columbia Business School and doctoral student Abbie Wazlawek, found that: 57% of those seen as not assertive enough believe they show just the right amount of feistiness or maybe even too much. 56% of those believed to be too bold by others thought they had just the right amount of can-do attitude or might even lack some. Most people can think of someone who is a jerk or a pushover and largely clueless about how theyre seen, said Ames. Sadly, our results suggest that, often enough, that clueless jerk or pushover is us. If you want to ensure that youre not coming across as too abrasive or a cream puff, then that means youve got to be more aware of how others see you. In a recent interview with Anita Bruzzese, Ames discusses the findings and provides some insight into how to make attitude adjustments tosave your career. AB: Did the findings about how people are clueless about how others perceive them come as a surprise to you? DA:We were surprised to find that people who were seen as getting it right often thought they were getting it wrong. A good share of negotiators seen by counterparts as appropriately assertive mistakenly thought they had crossed the line in their counterparts eyes, an effect we called the line crossing illusion. In our studies, some 30 to 40% of negotiators seen as appropriately assertive showed this illusion, double or triple the rate of people making the opposite error (coming across as appropriately assertive but mistakenly thinking they were seen as under-assertive). AB: Can you explain more about the line crossing illusion? DA:Our research tried to trace back the line crossing illusion to some of its causes. Why would so many people make this self-derogating error? There are probably several factors behind this, but one that we examined was something we called strategic umbrage. This is when a negotiation counterpart puts on a little drama in reaction to a proposal we might make. They might let out an exaggerated gasp of horror, stagger backwards with their hand over their heart, or just respond with a look of anguish as if we had violated all norms of decency. Sometimes that means our offer really is outrageous. But other times, thats just a gambit, a game played because the other person wants us to pay them more or charge them less. We found that the more a negotiator shows strategic umbrage, the more likely their counterpart is to fall prey to the line-crossing illusion. It may be just a negotiation ploy to get a slightly better deal, but people on the receiving end of these displays sometimes take them as a referendum on their character. AB: How would you suggest people gauge accurately how theyre seen by others? (read more here)

Does My Brand Need a Tagline 12 Experts Explain - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Does My Brand Need a Tagline 12 Experts Explain - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Does my organization need a tagline? Why or why not? The following answers are provided by members of  Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the world’s most promising young entrepreneurs. In partnership with Citi, YEC recently launched  BusinessCollective, a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. 1. If It Helps Explain Your Unique Value Proposition A company needs to bring something unique to the world. That means it contributes value  that other organizations dont. This is the companys unique value proposition. You should be able to describe this value clearly and succinctly to potential customers.  You dont need this proposition to be a tagline, but if it makes a great tagline,  go for it. I would avoid  creating taglines without meaning.   â€"  Alan Carniol,  Interview Success Formula 2. If Your Brand Doesnt Say It All If your brand says it all, a tagline isnt necessary. Bobs Best Burgers doesnt need the tagline The best burgers in town! We know, Bob, youve already told us.  Taglines communicate ideas and themes relevant to your business, which your brand may be failing to do. If you find your brand does the job, dont over-communicate your message on principle. Taglines arent a necessity.   â€"  Nathan Hale,  First American Merchant 3. If the Company Name Is Ambiguous If your company name is self-explanatory, a tagline isnt necessary. A tagline is beneficial for a company whose name isnt descriptive or is ambiguous. The trick is to make sure that it evolves with your company. Businesses often change their value props or their goals over the years, so your tagline needs to adapt to match who you are today â€" not who you were 10 years ago.   â€"  Vladimir Gendelman,  Company Folders, Inc 4. If Your Tagline Is Great Some companies do fine without a tagline, and if your tagline is horrible, it could actually hurt your business. Lazy taglines dont do much for your business either. Restaurants who use the tagline a great place to eat arent demonstrating what their unique purpose is. If you can create a great tagline that speaks to why youre the best at what you do, it can do wonders for your business.   â€"  Nicole Munoz,  Start Ranking Now 5. If It Reflects the Mission Deciding if an organization needs a tagline is based on several factors. Ideally, there are very few instances where a tagline shouldnt be present because it rarely does damage to a brand, and if effectively deployed, it helps the company be more memorable. Whenever possible make a tagline short, powerful, and reflective of the organizations value to the client.   â€"  Michael Spinosa,  Unleashed Technologies 6. If It Can Evolve At Round Table Companies, Vulnerability is Sexy has emerged as our tagline. It wasnt created from a strategy;  we simply took an internal conversation and directed it outward. As a result, we now sell branded T-shirts, are launching  a card game under the same name, and I recently delivered a TEDx talk with that title. A great tagline tells the world what you stand for.   â€"  Corey Blake,Round Table Companies 7. If You Want to Build Word of Mouth Developing a strong tagline forces you to synthesize your story into an easy soundbite. This is critical if you want to build word-of-mouth referrals. When you deliver a great experience, your fans will talk about your brand. Creating a compelling tagline gives them the language to use and allows you to control  how  they introduce new folks to your company.   â€"  Aaron Schwartz,  Modify 8. If You Want to Be Remembered I tried to think of a tagline for taglines and came up with: Whats not to love about taglines? After all, every time an announcer runs through the list of sponsors, the ones that stick in my mind are the ones with taglines. Love. Its what makes a Subaru. I find that infinitely more memorable than just the name Subaru.   â€"  Brandon Stapper,  858 Graphics 9. If You Dont Have Memorable, Repeatable and Informative Messages Otherwise Having a single defining tagline is not as important as you might think. It’s more important to have a few memorable, repeatable, and informative messages that you’re able to communicate whenever relevant and suitable. Relying on a single tagline limits you in the type of message you can communicate. No matter the message we always try to build one overarching brand story.   â€"Aron Susman,  TheSquareFoot 10. If You Want an Easy Way for the Company to Unite A tagline is a great tool to use to ensure that you and your employees fully understand and communicate what you do in one sentence or less. If you have an effective tagline, less impact rests on the importance of communicating a full elevator pitch. When your mission is boiled down to a handful of words, business owners and employees can fully unite on the companys bottom line.   â€"  Josh York,  GYMGUYZ 11. If Youre a Small Company Taglines are important for smaller companies who are not as widely recognized as their larger competitors. When a user is searching for a product or service, they often quickly browse through search results, briefly stopping on your site. You only have a few seconds to capture this user’s business. Your tagline  needs to sum up what your company is all about in a very small fraction of time.   â€"  Patrick Barnhill,  Specialist ID, Inc. 12. If Your Pitch Isnt Simple Enough We created the tagline Make Driving Safe for our new product Fensens. This tagline clearly demonstrates that we are  automotive safety-related and that we have the vision to  make our roads safe. If you can sum up your product/service and  make it clear what your vision is in only a few words, you are  miles ahead of the competition.   â€"  Andy Karuza,  FenSens

6 Reasons Leaders Must Be Good Decision-Makers CareerMetis.com

6 Reasons Leaders Must Be Good Decision-Makers Top reasons leaders should have excellent decision-making skills “The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes, but true leaders are decisive!”In the corporate world, leaders make all the difference. No matter how well-equipped your workforce is, if your leaders cannot make timely and prudent decisions, your investment will go in vain. Seems unreasonable? It might seem so, but it is going to make sense as you continue reading!evalIt is the job of a leader to steer the path for the subordinates, make the most out of their technical skills, and help them become the best versions of themselves as a professional and an individual. It is big enough of responsibility, and a leader has to make dozens of decisions to fulfill it. If a leader is incapable of deciding the matters at the right time, a lot of affairs can go south.Let’s say he chooses the wrong person for a task or floats an idea at the wrong time; your company will have to face the consequences.Nevertheless, decision making is an integral part of leadership. It is essential to not only make decisions but also to make the right decisions based on foresightedness and be ready to take responsibility for the consequences. While some of your team leads will be firm decision-makers, others will need your help to develop essential decision-making skills required for effective leadership. In such cases, you must give your prospect team leads an opportunity to get leadership trainingbefore they assume their leading roles. This article will comprehensively elaborate on the reasons why strong decision making is necessary for effective leadership and how your team heads may acquire or learn the essential skills. Top reasons leaders should have excellent decision-making skillsExceptional decision-making skills warrant you to have confidence in your stance and be assertive about it. When a leader has such skills, he/she won’t have to double guess their own decisions. Their actions are an embodiment of confidence and wisdom combined.Following are the r easons your company’s team heads need to be able to make appropriate decisions and show firmness on the standpoints when needed:1) To Maintain an Air of Clarity Within the TeamevalevalAmbiguities delay work and become a reason of time wastage. A leader has to ensure all the task completes in due time. How will a leader ensure that? By maintaining an air of clarity, so that none of the team members is in a state of ambiguity. When the subordinates are feeling ambiguous, they will not perform properly. They might even find it a chance to have time to enjoy instead of focusing on work. So, great decision-making skills help the leaders to maintain transparency through preciseness and clarity!2) To Take the InitiativeEveryday work routine involves taking actions. Unless a leader takes those initiatives, no team member will begin working or have a clear path ahead of him/her. A leader takes the initiative to set a direction for the others with the confidence to ensure that there are no t wo teams within a team. There is no denying that initiatives demand courage and mental strength. So, only a decisive leader has these qualities to be able to take suitable actions whenever required.3) To Handle Difficult SituationsevalEvery organization faces times of turmoil. There are times when you have to choose between the right and the wrong or two wrongs. Such situations are called ethical dilemmas, and the leaders are required to choose the lesser of the two evils. Only a good decision maker can take the lead and stays ready to face the consequences of the actions of his/her team, once the decisions are deployed. No doubt, such situations require strength and resilience in front of resistance coming your team head’s way. Only a good leader with strong nerves is capable of making difficult choices and then owning them. Thus, corporate team leaders need to have the strength of nerves essential for ensuring effective leadership.4) To Handle Conflicts Within the TeamNevertheless , diversity is the beauty of life. When human beings work together, disputes and differences will inevitably arise. A good team is not the one where there are no conflicts at all. A good team is the one that surpasses all such times and rises above the ashes to achieve organizational goals successfully. But who in the team is responsible for keeping the group going and help in moving on after accepting all the differences? It’s the leadership! The one whom everyone listens to in the team. So, a good leader with prudence and wisdom to help make peace after listening to concerns of both the parties and make final decisions to figure out a middle way for co-existence and mutual understanding.5) To Avoid Team Lead TurnoversWhen team leads are not assertive or do not make effective decisions, chances are higher that the team subordinates will take advantage of it. When the leaders do not fulfill their responsibility correctly, it gets easier for the team members below him/her in the hie rarchy to rise above and replace them.No matter how well-experienced a person is in his profession, if he cannot be firm in his decisions, he will struggle with leadership roles. Therefore, it is essential to improve the skills of decisiveness to become a transformational leader!6) To Analyze AlternativesevalOften it occurs to the leaders that they have to choose from more than one plausible option in daily organizational affairs. Being the team lead, you may be oscillating in your mind between the two alternatives. Let’s say both have an advantage for your team or organization, but you can choose only one. A person with a lack of mettle to make quick and logical decisions will waste time and stay unclear on the situation. In such cases, only a good leader with wise mental abilities will be able to conclude fast without feeling the need to reconsider his/her decision. You may encounter such situations every now and then while leading the business, so it is better to stay ready then repent later! What Happens When Leaders Cannot Decide Quickly? When people cannot make a decision, they make excuses. When team heads cannot decide, they put the work performance of their team as well as the company’s progress in jeopardy. They give the subordinates unnecessary space to indulge in workplace politics. In such times conflicts begin to develop.evalAgain, when conflicts arise, only wise leaders can help resolve the situation and encourage them, team members, to coexist in a professional setting. When dirty politics is going on around, only an intelligent decision maker will help eliminate the negative influences and improve the working environment of the team. When leaders are not right decision-makers, teams crumble like gingerbread houses. Within the groups, many conflicts arise. Team Performance wavers. The morale of the workers decline. Your business suffers. No one would want their teams and departments to fall apart like this.Ways to Improve Decision-making Skills in Team leads/leadersSource â€" DepositPhotos.comThe ever-growing complexities in the corporate sector have changed the famous maxim as “21st-centuryleaders are made not born”. It is because some traits are inherent; others can be learned with a little hard work and dedication. As a company owner/manager, you need to take this responsibility and help the ones in need of training for soft skillslike decision-making.However, there are some ways that can help your team leads to becoming strong decision-makers. Let’s dive into:a) Plan Ahead of TimePlanning saves you from a lot of hassle. One way to avoid the difficulty that comes at times of making tough decisions is to be mentally ready for the situation.evalThe leaders should be well-prepared to handle tough situations to keep everything as per the requirements, even if any challenging event they knock at the door. In this way, team leads will be able to stay composed and not feel any surge of emotions, which may affect your re asoning.b) Practice Conflict ManagementConflicts are difficult to handle for every human being. You only get better at managing themwith exposure to conflicts. Thus, your team leads need to face conflicts and experience them. When they practice how to manage conflicts and disputes, they begin to learn how to make difficult decisions with high stakes.c) Hire Professional Trainers! (Groom your skills through training)Not everything is learned individually, so the teachers, counselors, mentors, and trainers are there to help the emerging leaders in grooming their skills. Just the way you are confident that you are good at your profession, soft skills trainers know their job well.Just like you think your business can serve your customers well, your team leads can learn to lead effectively. So, it is better to devise comprehensive leadership training programs for instilling decision-making skills among the prospect leaders. Are Your Team Leads Influential Decision-makers?Summing up, the t eam leader is not just a title you get after getting promoted from a junior position. It is a responsibility very few people can shoulder. Responsibility goes beyond making decisions about daily affairs in the workplace. It includes owning what you have decided to do, or have put in the pipeline for your subordinates to do. If a person cannot even decide basic matters, how will he/she take responsibility, let alone own a good or bad decision? So, find out those who doubt their decisions. Identify their weaknesses and underlying factors. It is suggested to ensure corporate training programs for overcoming the weaknesses to enhance decision-making skills among the leaders. In this way, you can turn your doubters into confident decision-makers.Remember, leaders, are the captain of your business ships to make it sailing smoothly towards success. So, identify the good decision-makers and capitalize on their good leadership capabilities by focusing on effective skills grooming!

Useful Career Advice for Actors - CareerAlley

Useful Career Advice for Actors - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. There are thousands of actors out there but only a finite amount of parts. Then there are even fewer good parts so what are the best tips that to help actors get that big break and make their way to stardom? First of all they need to have patience. With acting there is a lot of waiting around. You are going to wait to be called for an audition. Then you could be waiting five hours for the audition to happen. Following the audition you will be waiting to see if you are called back or not. Then if you are called back you have to wait for casting to complete and shooting to begin. If you are shooting a pilot you have to wait to see if your show will be picked up. This is a lot of waiting and if you arent patient you are going to get very frustrated very quickly. You need to try and think outside the square. When everyone is competing against each other, doing something that makes you stand up. Thanks to the internet this is a lot easier. An actor can create a YouTube account and start posting clips of yourself acting. It could be you doing Shakespeare, recreating a famous movie scene or even doing your own stuff. If by some chance this goes viral you have now been discovered. Similar to this would be to get involved with short movie festivals. There are lots of movie festivals and here you have writers and directors who have come up with an idea and now need people to star in it. By appearing in one of these movies, there is another way that you can be noticed. If you feel as though you need some formal training, then you should consider some acting classes. There are some fantastic schools all over the country so whether you are looking for a New York acting school, one in Chicago or one in Los Angeles you are bound to find one. As there are plenty of great schools, you should research which is the best for you before you sign on. With alumni connections, at acting school, you have a chance to strut your stuff before some pretty famous people and if they like what they see, they may take you under their wing. Movies are always looking for extras and its a great way to try and make some connections. While on set you can speak to other members of the cast and crew and you can build your way up from extra to someone who gets a few lines. Having this on your resume is great. The problem with unknown actor approaching celebrities is that they get bombarded with requests all the time so you have to say the right thing at the right time. The same thing applies to speaking to agents. The top agents just wont deal with nobodies so if you are going to talk to them make sure you dont waste the opportunity. Everyone dreams of being a famous actor, starring in blockbusters and winning Academy Awards. It can happen but just appreciate that it wont happen overnight. Dana Blackburn writes about career advice. When not going this, she likes to do the New York Times crossword. This is a Guest post.
